Back in 2007 I used this title for the first time.  Actually, that day I just used the title “random tugs.”  Only later did I do an installment 2, and then on. Then there was really random tugs, and random Nola [and fill in the blank with other geographical qualifiers, and other permutations. Never did I realize at some point I’d do a 400, but here we are, and it’s just another mile markers.  This photo with HOS Browning, Doubleskin 58, Alex McAllister, Hayward, and Ava M and others I took about a month ago in the boro.

This photo I took in Lackawanna near Buffalo back in October, and she has a sixth boro connection.  She used to work locally here as . . .  Captain Zeke!!  Here was one of my favorite photos of Captain Zeke.

It’s been a while since I’ve seen Sea Wolf, but maybe I’ve just looked for wolves in the wrong places.

Cajun came through earlier this week, between dredging work.

This is my first time seeing Everly Mist with an oil barge, although as Evening Mist, she moved nothing but.

Bruce A. McAllister passed Mount St Elias in the Upper Bay.

Liz Alma is quite rarely seen in the sixth boro, and so

is Rikki S, although I took both pics–Liz and Rikki–in the past week.  Maybe it’s a respite from their dredge jobs for the season.

Traffic, when you’re trapped in it, is not fun.  Watching commercial marine traffic, for me, never gets old, as you might know.  The more things get, the more interesting the harbor seems.    A handful of sophisticated and expensive machinery and its skilled operators jam pack this image.  I see three Centerline boats, JRT, and Safmarine Nomazwe.

Roughly the same place and hour and some later, Thunder, just off the port side of Caroline M, shares this image with at least three other tugboats that almost blend into the cold humid morning.

Foreshortening makes Laura K and Doris Moran seem a lot closer together than they are. 

Here it’s Marilyn George, Coursen, Alex McAllister, and Wye River, I believe.

Besides the three tugs along the left side, that’s Alex, Kristy Ann with RTC 80, Barney, and Kristin Poling pushing Eva Leigh Cutler.  Between Barney and Kristin are at least two Kirby boats.

This was several minutes after the previous photo with some of the same boats.

Daisy Mae here pushes a CMT barge with a Vane unit in the distance, in front of an impossibly packed set of cliffs.

This is not so much packed as it is filled with very different examples of marine commercial traffic.

And in closing, clustered in front of USNS Red Cloud, clockwise starting from Cajun, it’s J. Arnold Witte, USACE Haward, and Marjorie B. McAllister.

Some things like winter fishing in the harbor appear not to change in a decade, but

Houma will never again move Mary A. WhalenHouma, built at Jakobson in 1970, was scrapped in 2017.  PortSide NewYork currently has a berth for the tanker and many other activities in Atlantic Basin, Red Hook.

B. E. Lindholm, built in St.Paul MN in 1985,  is alive and well, currently dredging off Fire Island.

This Kristin Poling was still working 10 years ago, definitely a survivor from before WW2 and also definitely then in her home stretch.  Byearly 2012 she was scrapped.

In March 2010 I also had a chance to gallivant off to Baltimore, home of NS Savannah.  If my calculations are correct, she was in service for 10 years total, and now in mothballs for 48!! Truth be told, she was a prototype, a demo ship with limited cargo capacity but also passengers.  Her beautiful lines were designed by George S. Sharp.  Recently she was at the end of a towline,  a sight I’m sorry I missed.  A wealth of info and video as well as smart comments can be found on this demo vessel here in a publication called Atomic Insights.  Let me quote a small section to tease you into reading the article:  “By technical measures, the ship was a success. She performed well at sea, her safety record was impressive, her fuel economy was unsurpassed and her gleaming white paint was never smudged by exhaust smoke.”

Cajun stood by Chios Voyager near the Inner Harbor Domino Sugars plant.   Cajun still works along the east coast US.  Chios Voyager, built 1984, has been scrapped.

And a somber last photo . . . I caught El Faro in Baltimore 10 years ago.  Little did I expect then what we all know now.

Lorette is one of two Norfolk tugs that used to be Moran boats.

Kodiak has been in the sixth boro on a few occasions.  Here’s more of her current fleet:  Maverick, ?Southern Star?, and Challenger.

Hoss, like the boats immediately above is also an Intracoastal Marine boat. Hoss is a close relative via Wiley Manufacturing of the sixth boro’s Patricia.   Sun Merchant, which I saw here in Savannah, is a Vane boat.

Corman Marine’s Captain Mac is yet another tugboat in the Elizabeth owned by a construction company.

Camie and Cajun look alike but may be owned by Robbins Maritime and Bay Transportation, respectively.

Three Sisters seems to be owned by a family-oriented company called Smith Brothers.

Elizabeth Ann, operated by Atlantic Gulf Towing, used to be known as El Hippo Grande, a truly satisfactory name for a workboat.

A request, though.   Over by the Norfolk Dredging yard, I saw their small tug Palmyra through the trees and could not get a good shot.  Has anyone taken one over the years?  If so, could you share it on this blog?  Send me an email, please.

The heart of Baltimore offers a look at some tug house design evolution.  Cape Romain dates from 1979.  Note the green (of course) building toward the right side of the foto:  the Cat’s Eye Pub.

Harriet Moran dates from 1978, but I don’t know

when she was retrofitted.

Surrie Moran (2000) resembles the newer Moran tugs like Gramma Lee T. and Laura K.

Again, Surrie, Cape Roman, with two SL-7s Denebola and Antares in the background.

Joan Turecamo (built at Matton near Waterford, NY 1980)  backs out while Gulf Dawn (1966, ex-Frances J) approaches.  Gulf Dawn was last on this blog last March.

Notice the line hanging from the top of the house,

equipment I’ve never sen before.

Last for now, Cajun passes outbound near the sugar ship, Chios Voyager.
