peerlessly named Zeus, 

and the distinctive James Charles.

A lot more has been said of them here, here, and here.  A lot more will be said again in the future, I’m sure.

Random Tugs 396

Here’s random from a foggy day recently.  Pearl Coast . . . 127′ x 40′ . . . a large 5600 hp tugboat.

Maddie K . . ..  73′ x 24′ and 2000 hp.

Miss Madeline, 69′ x 26 and 2000 hp.

Pelham, the movie tug, 80′ x 26′ and 3000 hp.

Cape Canaveral,  105′ x 36′ and 5000 hp.  Here are the stats on Torm Adventurer.

Sea Lion, 65′ x 22′ and 1400 hp.

Marjorie B McAllister is  112′ x 30′ and 4000 hp.

I can’t tell you anything about Kimberly S.

Mary Turecamo,    107′ x 32′ and 4300 hp.

Zeus, 99′ x 29′ and 2250 hp, and who would ever rename Zeus!?  No one.  Nor have Mary Turecamo, Cape Canaveral, Buchanan 12, or Sea Lion.

Buchanan 12 . . .  87′ x 30′ and 3000 hp.

Morning 2022

Consider this to be in the spirit of Dawn 2021.  I wasn’t there at dawn because the ship I wanted to catch–CMA CGM Von Humboldt–departed in the 0’darks, but I arrived a bit later, cold notwithstanding.

The first tugboat I photographed in 2022 was Zeus!  Truth be told, her profile against the Raritan highlands was unmistakeable, but I was a half hour too late for a better shot;  I hadn’t expected a traffic tie-up.  She’s headed for Hampton Roads and beyond.

The second and third are Bruce A. McAllister and 

Ava M, going to the Narrows to see someone about a ship

Next it was Brendan Turecamo assisting a Liberian-flagged tanker, Horizon Thetis.  If you want some interesting origin stories, check a mythology text about the relationship between Zeus and Thetis. 

Chemical Petrochemical Trader with Brownsville as the prime mover was next.

A while later Bruce A and 

and Ava M came in with their catch, Ever Far.  I’ll put up more photos of this new Ever F-class vessel later. 

And finally, it’s my first view ever of Centerline’s Rubia, ex-Denise A. Bouchard.  If you look closely, you can see Centerline’s lion on the stack. And the name Rubia . . . that’s Spanish for “blonde”… hmmm;  it looks more platinum to me.

Newest Hull(s) in the Sixth Boro 11

Meagan Ann is not new, but that blue coaming on the barge looks to be.

Witte 3301 came into the harbor via Ambrose the other day for the very first time.

pushed by Meagan Ann.  Recently launched in Erie PA,

the barge, which I estimate to be about 220′, was brought to the sixth boro by Zeus, returned from the Great Lakes after at least five years up on the fresh water. 

Zeus, the first boat this October I see with pink trim,

moved both 3301 and 3302 around via the Saint Lawrence, but then handed one of the barges off to Meagan Ann just outside the VZ Bridge.

 

Welcome back, Zeus,  although soon after dropping off the barges, she headed off to the Dann Marine base in Chesapeake City.

One stop of the new barges was captured by my Halifax counterpart, Mac Mackay here.

Always Fleet Week

That’s true along the Elizabeth River in Virgina.  Naval Station Norfolk always has a formidable array, like

LPD-24 USS Arlington,

T-ARC-7 USNS Zeus,

T-AKE-13 USNS Medgar Evers,

T-ESB-3 USNS Lewis B. Puller,

lots of patrols and a fence,

T-AKR-5063 USNS SS Cape May,

and its complement of barges.  Here’s more of a description.

 

Then, there’s the R class.

Sixth Boro Seven Plus

Sometimes I like to start new categories so that the numbers don’t get so high, boats no longer extant or frequent get a second look, and we realize that time is passing pretty fast.  So all the photos here I took more than seven years ago.  Some have been on the blog before, but not together and not edited exactly as they are now.

Like Norwegian Sea, she used to be a wintertime staple running up the River, easily recognizable by her upper wheelhouse.

Juliet is still around but not very busy under her new name . . . it seems.

This boat, like her namesake, is gone too soon. Pegasus is still around but no longer looks this way.

Zeus was on the Great Lakes after working in the sixth boro, but I’ve lost track of her.

Volunteer, another unmistakable profile, now long time gone from here.

Zachery  . . . still around and still working. High Peace is now registered Vietnamese and goes by Pvt Dolphin.

Just to break the pattern here, here’s a photo I took of Zachery a few days ago.

Take my word for this last photo . . . the distant unit I can’t identify although I’m guessing a Reinauer boat, but the closer vessel is outrageous.  Actually I mean Outrageous.  That’s the name.  Click here (and scroll) for a previous photo of Outrageous, which I believe used to be based in the sixth boro.

Decks and the City 2

(cont. from yesterday)

Divine decks and the city . . . with Zeus.  Between Zeus and the city, that’s GMD docks at Bayonne, where both Tavrichesky Bridge and Sichem Defiance are having some attention lavished on them.  Notice between Zeus bow and the left side of the foto … just beyond the ivory colored building then to the right of Three World Financial Center … it’s Zurab Tsereteli‘s 9/11 monument.

Miriam Moran spinning the decks of Affinity while survey deck of Wolf River slips past.  Wolf River . . . now that’s a vessel whose name is begging for lyrics and a tune.

Over on the opposite side, we see Jersey City astride the afterdeck of Gramma Lee T Moran.

East Coast decks approaching a scrap tow pushed by a blue boat . . . and just off and beyond the clusterflurry of Manhattan, you can see Citibank Tower in Queens.

Of course, it’s June K, pushing two decks worth of scrap,  with fishing decks way off in the distance in front of the ferry terminal/Whitehall portion of the city and headed toward the East River.

Parting decks and the city:  the decks of NYK Daedalus and the ex-city Brooklyn, now one of the six boros, topped by the ex-Williamsburgh Savings Bank Tower.

Any time you’re ready for more decks and the city, call me.  Don’t expect any resemblance to characters with names like Henry or Harry or Carry or Chary or  …  But all these banks, time for some Pete Seeger.  Indulge me.
