Tugster does not strive to be a “shipping news” site, but each time I walk or ride my beat, I DO keep an watchful eye for change, novelty, well . . . new sights. Certainly this was true yesterday: let’s start with the orange vessel to your left. You’ve seen the colors before, but is that a “hole through the stern above deck”?
I have a feeling we’ll be seeing a bit more of Swan in the next few days. And I trust lessons have been learned from last spring’s Blue Marlin saga.
So Beaufort Sea has begun its Kirbyfication. As has Norwegian Sea, but I was too far off to get a good foto.
Resolute‘s foredeck seemed to be carrying a lot more than deckhands yesterday. And is that a movie camera? And what were they all looking at?
How about this unusual equipment on Ellen? Is MOL Earnest that tough a customer?
Iron Eagle is not new to the harbor, but the Conti name is . . . at least to me.
Rosemary Miller? New too. I wonder what has become of Sorenson Miller.
With spring comes the sailing season, and America 2.0 . . . I last saw closeup here last fall.
And one last “newby” I was lucky to catch yesterday was Mark Moran, headed south to . . who knows where? Mark‘s so new that even on Birk and Harold’s excellent site, there’s only a drawing of her.
Followup on lots of these soon. All fotos taken yesterday by Will Van Dorp.
For the news from the Narrows between Detroit (which means “the narrows” in French) and Windsor, click here for Isaac’s site and some great fotos from Wade. The surprise there for me was Zeus, who worked the sixth boro a bit a few years back. Also, there are more shots of DonJon’s huge Great Lakes ATB unit.
Also, of course please vote for tug Pegasus and Lehigh Valley 79. The fact that they’re not in the top few places should NOT be a reason to give up; we have a daily vote until the 21st.

Is there a deadline approaching deadline for phasing out single-skin oil barges? Is that what is driving sales to Nigeria?

i could be wrong, but i think the deadline differs vessel to vessel. be that as it may, the clock stops ticking for all at a certain point.

“MARK MORAN” is headed to join the Moran Baltimore fleet. Or, that was the word a month or so ago.

Isn’t it Birk and Harold’s (not Howard’s) site? Anyway, Detroit may be cool and all but your blog far exceeds mine. Once summer hits I’ll get out on the road and have more than Detroit to show.

There Is A Deadline For Single Skin Tankers & Tank Barges. After The Grounding Of The EXXON VALDEZ In 1989, The OPA 90 Regulation Was Put Into Effect, That All Newly Constructed Tank Barges & Tankers Must Be Double Hulled. There Was A Grandfather Clause Put Into Effect Allowing Companies To Upgrade Their Fleets To Double Hulls, & Since There Would Be A Large Demand For New Construction, Allowance Was Made For Companies To Make The Upgrades. Time Is Running Out, However, & The Single Skins Must Go For The Companies To Be In Compliance With OPA 90.

MARK MORAN Is Moran’s Newest Tractor. No Official Assignment Has Been Made For Her, But As Allen Baker Had Mentioned Above, She Is Rumored To Be Assigned To The Baltimore Fleet. Makes Good Sense However, SInce The Mortrac Tug DRUM POINT Was Transferred Recently Up To The Portsmouth, New Hampshire Fleet. Two More Unnamed Tractors Are Being Built By Washburn & Doughty To Follow MARK. http://www.morantug.com/site/#/tug_fleet_list

Tough to tell from this angle, but she looks similar to the Capt. Jimmy T Moran, based in NOLA. Jimmy T is slightly shorter than the 92 ft class such as Lee T. and Laura K.. The NOLA gang like her a lot.

Is the tug Ellen the operating indirect on MOL Earnest’s stern? She must be a z-drive, I dont know of many conventional tugs that an safely do that.
Also, I reviewed your photos of Pegasus and I love seeing an old tug still hauling an appropriate barge around with her. I work on modern tugs and such but my heart is till in the old boat and the skill therein. The closest I’ve gotten to the handling skills of old is long wire towing up in Alaska.
Thanks again for the great reports from the sixth borough.

I note that “Mark” appears to be a much cleaner, more fair design than others, not the speed by her displaced quarter wake and the lack of disturbed water, almost as clean as a sailing vessel.
Speculation: Did K’Seas problems and sale rise from that event on the Delaware two years back? Last week there was a 17 Million dollar wrongfull death judgement for the run down duck boat and there will be more to follow for other injuries. NTSB found against them .
