Substantial intrigued me not only because of the name, the A-frame, but also the day shape that could be seen although I think it was not being displayed.  A day shape with two black balls and a black diamond in between means “while working, restricted in ability to maneuver.”  Substantial  is a made-over yacht, now used as a day-ops survey vessel.

Suzanne McAllister has been at Bayonne for some time now for a make-over;  the name is not yet displayed.  Here’s how she looked 10 weeks ago.

Any guesses what relatively smaller scale McAllister tugboat is off her port side?

I count at least seven workers in the photo of the substantial Suzanne below.  Given all that gray primer, I suspect the red paint will be opened up fairly soon.  Beyond and in green, that’s MV Don Pasquale.  I wonder how many millions of cars and trucks she’s transported in her lifetime!?!

It’s good to see a drill/test run of one of Marchi‘s rescue boats.

That name seems more suited to a starship?

The anchorage was busy the other day.

Any guesses on Alexia?

All photos, any errors, WVD.

My guess for the McAllister tugboat next to Suzanne is Ellen McAllister.  And Alexia, I believe, is a transAtlantic rowboat.

Or . . . first “random ships” post since September 2023, even though I’ve seen a few.

I could just leave this post with one photo.  In the background is the port of Bayonne, with a Fugro vessel Fugro Explorer tied up, likely for resupplying and/or crew change, but I’m speculating.  To the left is Vane’s Fells Point.  In the center is Avra Patros, a 2008 crude tanker.   Translate Avra Patros?  Or should that be “avra, patros”?  And who was the Fell of the point?  Answers follow.

Speaking of Fugro, the orange vessel here is Sea Gull, a regular of late in the boro.  A Dann Marine tugboat is off its bow, and a CMT tug off its stern.  On the opposite side of the e-crane is a bulk carrier, Strategic Venture.  I believe it was here with salt, but I’m not sure.   Why e-crane?

So what’s the Fugro connection?  Fugro has recently added Sea Gull to its fleet.

Answers:  Back to the questions above, in order.

Avra Patros translates as “goodbye father.”  Maybe it would make more sense as “goodbye, father,” and if so, what’s the deal there?

Here’s a chronology of the Fells and their point from 1726 to the present.

And finally, e- is short for equilibrium in the term e-crane.

Now for some photos of random ships, and if you have time at the computer today, you can dive into any of these rabbit holes, starting with

OOCL Chongqing,

Don Pasquale,

Dubai Express

Sakura Belle

Zim Atlantic,

Safmarine Nomazwe,

Grande Cotonou,

Teno,

and STI Duchessa and Asphalt Synergy.  They all have stories.

This photo shows my uniforms are NOT colorful, rather noir-ish or more accurately zwart-wit, as the Dutch would put it.

And speaking of the Dutch, today is their/our Sinterklaas Day.  More on the real Sint , not a plastic one like on the clever Broadway pedicab below, here.

Here’s why I’m focusing on color:  the other day while out on the Media Boat and happily taking photos of water doings, I found myself shocked when first I downloaded the photos to the big screen and thought maybe I had my settings wrong because they seemed black/white!  To get color, I pushed the slider bars for color and saturation way up to 11, or 111!

Here’s the result:  an orange orange ferry, red n blue red n blue gantry cranes,

an aqua aqua Pasquale

a green green buoy and  Phyllis Ann

a blue blue Emily Ann,

and a purple yellow purple yellow Linda Sue foreground and red red James William in the distance.

Again, happy Sinterklaas Day [prettige sinterklaas].
