In winter I sometimes ride the ferry just to see what’s out there.  It’s akin to dropping a baited hook in the water just to see what’s biting, what out there or in there.  Other times I go out to see something specific.  These photos are from the former.

The skyline and the water changes little if at all in relation to the seasons.

When the harbor is as empty as it was the other day, Cape Canaveral and DBL 101 notwithstanding, my attention gets drawn to the skyline along a variety of sight lines.  The steeple at St. Michael’s in Sunset Park is quite distinctive.  I talked about that way back in 2010 here.

Patriot and Mary H seem to be most active only in winter, running between the Kills and the waterway that should be called the kill of kills (Dutch and English) . . . aka Newtown Creek, with the “new town” being what became Queens.  Do check out the second link in that previous sentence for a great presentation on the long history of that creek use and abuse.  Here’s more on the waterway.  A final link here dates to 2007, when I first went up the creek and saw the kills.

A final sight line from mid Upper Bay .  . .  the Narrows, a smudge of the NJ coastline across Raritan Bay, and a recent variety of vessels anchored.

All photos, any errors, WVD.
