Just a quick update: I’ve heard from 11 people–some on email–willing to put up some money. I intended this as pledging a la Public Radio/Television. I had imagined that once a sizeable amount of money was pledged and a goal for the money was agreed upon, we could collect the money. May Day–the seasonal one–arrives soon. The dire one I hope never arrives. To fuel the discussion, I’m putting up fotos never before (I think) never posted here. Like Peking,
Lettie,

It is fitting the Mayor of the Sixth Boro, Will Van Dorp, challenges us with this important effort on behalf of his South Street Seaport constituents.
Will, I join you and our friends and neighbors in the waterfront community in support of this important historical cause.
When I first heard about the Department of interior being the conservator of the San Francisco Maritime Museum, I thought, brilliant. So close to the Statue of Liberty, this might work for South Street. But after reading some of the posts, it’s disheartening to learn the Department of the Interior is possibly falling down on the job of conserving the San Francisco Maritime Museum. It might be helpful to know more of their situation.
Whoever takes on this challenge will have a sea bag full of drama.
Maritime museums are inherently expensive and difficult to curate simply because of the unstable elements of nature constantly working on the floating exhibits. Electrolysis, tides, ice, barnacles, boring parasites and slips silting in are just some of the challenges. And that’s before you get to the fun above the waterline.
The effort requires al need to raise funds, organize corps of volunteers and suffer fools with good intentions.
I admire you, Mayor Will, for confronting this unfortunate situation and bringing us together.

You can count me in for $100. A lot of people have been reposting on Facebook, I’m guessing they are willing to pledge as well.
