 . . .  and more.  But first, a refresher on Y a M 4, which included the photo below.

A year and a half after the photo above, I caught Utopia IV at Chelsea Piers, and just yesterday I read the report on an incident the yacht was involved in down in the Bahamas:  she ran down and sank a small tanker!!

Here’s the gCaptain article.  Utopia IV can be yours give or take about $50 million.

I believe I’ve not posted photos of this yacht with a million headaches, although I saw it a few times at Chelsea Piers a few years back.  Recognize the name?  The owner–who may have legally forfeited it by now–is Guo Wengui, and some of his story is here. In April 2022, it was reported in an unnamed Med port, but these photos I took in December in Bridgeport CT.

Then there was the Semisub One story from Hawaii . . .  .  Then there’s Luna, just one of a Russian oligarch‘s yacht fleet, which was in the boro about a decade ago.  Le Grand Bleu and Topaz have been here also.

Yachts . .  a million headaches, IMHO, although I hope I’m not sounding like a crank today.

Truth be told, I don’t post many people carrier photos on this blog, and I mean no slight to crews who work them.  The very best boat handling is in order whenever passengers are aboard.  What’s remarkable is that I’ve seen all these vessels/taken these photos since Monday of this week!

Circle Line, which carries at least a million passengers a year in the sixth boro,  has a long and interesting history, an introduction to which you can read here.  Circle Line Manhattan was launched in 2008, to replace Circle Line XI.

Know this Delaware?

Periodically, the 1974 Cape May-Lewes Ferry sends its boats into the boro to have scheduled maintenance done at Caddell’s shipyard. 

Then there are the VIpeople movers.  Utopia IV first caught my attention because it was actually US-registered, which made me wonder who this patriotic owner is.  Later, I realized I’d seen this yacht before here.  It also gained some notoriety about a year ago here, although then owner, RIP, was not on board at the time.

I don’t recall seeing Norwegian Sun in the boro, but don’t take me as a reliable judge of cruise ship comings and goings.  Not even half a year ago, Sun was in Alaskan waters.

Ocean Explorer first arrived in the boro just over a year ago, as seen here.  She’s here after having spent part of the summer sailing on the Great Lakes.  Click here for near future tours on the cruise ship with the Ulstein bow.

If you’re on the sixth boro or the Hudson River today, you may see this Sea Lion, the Nat Geo Sea Lion.  She’s Seattle-registered and was launched by Nichols Brothers Boatbuilders as Great Rivers Explorer in 1982.

 

She and her sister Nat Geo Sea Bird get around;  unfortunately they can’t fit through the Erie Canal. Having said that, the Hudson River is a world-class scenic ride, and has always been.

See it between those ships?  It’s  . . .

 Utopia! And that’s within the dimensions of 207′ x 36′ and powered by 4 x MTU 16V 2000 M96L’s.

Well, Utopia IV, that is, the $50 million yacht of someone with the net worth . . . of Bob Dylan.  Back to that later, the owner’s previous yacht, as you can imagine was Utopia III.  

The IV is available to charter for a mere half million a week, chartered through Moran Yacht and Ship, which has no connections, that I know of, to Moran Towing.

The low-profile yacht is capable of 33 knots, with a range of 3600 nm.  At 30 knots, it can cover the 950 nm between Miami and New York in a day and a half, if my math is correct. 

Not visible here is the fold down transom that has a square footage greater than my Queens apartment!

The Bob Dylan reference above . . . he sold his rights to his work recently for $300 million, said to be the net worth of JR Ridinger, owner of Utopia IV.  Maybe he came up for the fireworks?

 

Here are previous installments.

I caught Invictus earlier this week as it came into the boro.  I had no idea then that by midweek, it would become newsworthy, although it would be on Page Six.  Anyone know what I’m talking about?  Answer follows.

I don’t know if this is the Invictus owner driving the tender or wearing the red shirt topside in the photo above, but this tender followed the bigger vessel in.  Invictus is US built by Delta, although it’s not US-flagged.

Lady May IV, tied up over at Chelsea Piers is Dutch built. It’s smaller than Invictus and for sale for about one-third the price of Invictus.

If I’m correct about the larger of two yachts directly below the Empire State Building, that Utopia IV, Italian built. I have seen a Utopia II and III in the boro in previous years, although I’m not sure there’s a connection.

Contina has been here before;  it appears to be Brazil built by Inace yachts of Fortaleza.  I wonder why the CO painted on the bow previously is no longer there.
