I’d planned something else for today, but then I saw the tree! See it on the bow of Pilot No 2 New Jersey? And that reminded me it was Three Kings day, Epiphany.

The colors are always best when wind chills are biting. Pilot No 2 and the smaller boat, America, went out as it were in a procession.

America stayed out over the horizon, but New Jersey returned, tree intact.

This reminded me also of photos I’d taken from New York Media Boat and had intended to use for my Christmas post. From its station out at the sea end of Ambrose Channel, the VZ Bridge is clearly seen.

Coming from sea, this is first glimpse of the port, two states and all six boros.

Safe year to all.

All photos, WVD. Thanks to New York Media Boat.
Six years ago, I posted this for Three Kings. And the tree makes this a great complementary bookend for this season.
Each year around this time, SUNY Maritime cadets go to sea. Click here for photos from last year’s departure and here, for ports throughout the summer. You can track the vessel here.
Here was a clue that a ship was headed this way.
The next three photos here come from Roger Munoz, high atop the 74th St ConEd plant.
That’s Roosevelt Island on the other side, at the southern tip of which i waited.
Here the training ship passes under the 59th Street Bridge,
and past the Empire State Building . . .
escorted by a fireboat and
two McAllister tugboats.
Some of the cadets who made this journey last summer are already employed as professional mariners today. And somewhat related, any guesses how long ago this particular T/S Empire State, the VI, was launched? Click here for info on her former life. To see some dramatic shots of the knife edge cutting through the middle of the Atlantic, click here. If you’re impatient, jump ahead to the 3-minute mark.
Thanks much to Roger Munoz, a SUNY grad, for the three photos from high atop the East River.
And here is a time lapse gif of ES VI passing, thanks to Rand Miller.
While researching this post, I stumbled upon a blog that seems to have ceased after a quite promising start. Check out this Norrie Point pilot boat along the Hudson here. Tom, I’d love to hear from you. I believe the foto below (I took it a year ago in Tottenville) shows a Hudson River Pilot boat of the sort I’ve seen from a distance at Norrie Point. Besides Ambrose, many vessels do Hudson River Pilots operate? Is this the 1979 Gladding Hearn Ambrose?
Below is the a foto showing the closest I’ve ever come to Norrie Point, with pilot boat on station. Is the building the Norrie Point Environmental Center?
Sandy Hook pilots recently acquired two Derecktor-built 53-foot pilot boats.
Coming or going or
holding station with a famous marine photograher (not me!) on the foredeck,
I’m impressed by these vessels.

Unrelated: today is EVR Day.
