These small craft operate all year round in the sixth boro.
I’ve seen at least two Clean Harbors boats in the harbor, 32 and maybe . . . 33. But the company is hardly local. I once saw one of their trucks on the NY Thruway west of Syracuse. Click here for the history of this Massachusetts headquartered business.
Evidenced by the unique Donjon blue, Sea Explorer is one of the sixth boro company’s survey boats. Of course, Donjon certainly doesn’t operate only locally either.
Here the small boat was eastbound in the direction of the Sound.
Miller’s Launch has a lot of boats, including a handful of launch boats like Nicholas Miller here.
Axopar is a relatively new Finnish boat manufacturer. These don’t appear to be work boats like all the others here, but they are certainly workboat design inspired.
Here are two
separate boats I’ve seen in the boro of late.
Maybe a reader can comment further about these boats.
The first Axopar I saw half a decade ago on the Erie Canal . . . the last one here.
NJ State Police has quite a fleet, but their website has not been updated to reflect the vessel below.
Rounding out this post . . . this Billion Oyster project boat was round the Battery the other day.

Off New London USCGC Coho and a 45′ response boat take part in training off Race Rock Light and then later off
Little Gull Island Light, with the 87′ towing the 45′ boats.
A regular in the sixth boro is USCGC Beluga.
The 29′ patrol boats monitor lots of activities in the harbor; here they board a small fishing boat.
Of the many USCG aids-to-navigation (AToN) boats, this is 49′ BUSL.
Small USACE survey boats seem constantly at work in the harbor.
NYC DEP has a monitoring boat, Sandpiper. Another one of their boats is called Osprey.
Another DEP vessel, this one is called Oyster Catcher.
NYPD has its own navy; here is one of their bigger boats, the 55′ Det. Luis Lopez.
Here’s another NYPD patrol boat, drawled dwarfed by a ULCV bow wave. [I like that new word “drawled,” sort of like swamped but not quite maybe.]
One of the four carriers (yes, they carry, and for which the demand never stops) of the DEP fleet is Rockaway.
Any guesses on this speedy black vessel?
It’s a marine unit of the same folks you might be talking to if you’re speedy on roads inland.

Here were previous snapshots of sample small craft on the sixth boro, a city of water all summer and all other seasons as well. Here one of the four-season RIBs of NY Media Boat passes along the western margins of Brooklyn, where a lot of folks congregate in the evening.
Manhattan is one of Classic Harbor Line‘s vessel.
Crew launch Christian works all summer and all other seasons too.
Tara heads under the Brooklyn Bridge as light fades.
Fish appear to be active over where Kate used to chum with food scraps.
And this skipper seemed to enjoy pushing his craft against the currents in Hell Gate.
And there are so many other small craft in all parts of the sixth boro. All these photos taken recently by Will Van Dorp.
. .. make that boats and ships. Thanks to Allen Baker for sending along this set of T-AKR 294 Antares moving out of GMD back in January 2010. Yup, some drafts get caught in an eddy and they spin round and round never getting posted. But I’m a believer that late is better than never.
