Here’s a good view of the props on a z-drive boat. The 8.5′ props are part of the Schottel SRP 1515 FP drive system. Note the port-a-potty between the stacks, a dry-dock worker convenience?
The scale of the cranes at Howland Hook belies the fact that Jay Michael and Bosco, passing Shooters Island, are still at least a mile closer to the lens than HH port.
In different light, here’s a Bosco closeup.
James E. Brown before dawn; the structure like a lighthouse beyond JEB‘s stern is the control tower at Newark Airport, which celebrates its 90th anniversary this coming October.
The Statue salutes Little C. I’ve often tried for a photo that suggests the Statue’s eyes are fixed on something in the foreground, and I’d say here Little C has helped me make that happen.
Barge John Blanche is returned homeward through Hell Gate by Diane B.
OK . . . Is it Joan or Doris?
I’ll stop here. All photos by Will Van Dorp.
On a day in the sixth boro, you’ll see a lot of working boats that’ve been around a while. These are randomly chosen. Lynx dates from 1967.
Stephen Dann from 1999.
Weddell Sea from 2007 and Lincoln Sea, 2000.
Joyce D. Brown, 2002.
Buchanan 1 . . . is she aka Buchanan 10? If so, 1967.
Marty C, 1981.
Little C, 1988. She looks somewhat similar to Lil Rip.
Pearl Coast, looking huge out of the notch, 1978.

You can find the first eight installments here.
Little C is a relatively seldom seen harbor tug
dedicated to Warren George projects.
Coal?
Navigator these days has been pushing coal around the harbor, coal as I understand it thanks to ws–a frequent commenter here–that
was previously intended as fuel to the now-retired Hudson Generation Station.
Transport of some of the coal out of the sixth boro has been performed by SBI Jive; from here, the vessel’s traveled to Rotterdam, then Ust-Luga on the Baltic.
Photos by Will Van Dorp; thanks to ws for following the coal.
As to SBI Jive, she has fleet mates with gambolling names like SBI Macarena, SBI Swing, SBI Zumba, SBI Reggae, SBI Mazurka, SBI Samba, SBI Capoeira . . . and more.
Ocean Tower passes the tow of Wavertree, aka “ocean wanderer.”

A video of the welcome of Half Moon now in Hoorn.
A fun 8-minute 7-day trip from the Hudson River to the Thousand Islands via the Erie Canal, with ALL the locks!
A less-professional video of the arrival of Half Moon in Hoorn, but showing music by the Musiek Boot, delightful man of the waters, Reinier Sijpkens, (click here and scroll) who entertained here in the sixth boro six years ago.
Today again I just succumb to randomness. Below John Malik ( or is it Anabelle Roehrig) engages in some mimicry with the Bartholdi/Eiffel structure.
Thanks to Mike Lesser, Evening Tide, eastbound in the KVK.
Here’s Penobscot, a downeast name like the others from Hartley Marine Services, east or downeastbound on the East River. I’ve got some great names coming up soon, maybe tomorrow.
Below Realist heads northbound from the Narrows. I’ve yet to discover the company for Realist and Specialist.
And finally, what was behind the first tuggable truck yesterday, Little C.
Back to my other work.
OK . . . this is a flip of the “truckable tugs” post. I didn’t coin “truckable tug” but I am trying out the title above.
The truck isn’t really on the tug but on a tug-pushed barge. Tug Little C will appear in a post soon.
I believe this is Susan Miller pushing another truck. Check out the great Millers Launch site. More Millers coming soon too.
The white truck on the dock used to be called an Ottawa; seems they’ve been transformed into Kalmar. At ports like Red Hook, they “feed” the cranes. I think this one wants to die and come back as a Moran tug.
This old truck just wants to grow up and run on salt water, ambiguity intended.
All photos, Will Van Dorp.
