Truth be told, I don’t post many people carrier photos on this blog, and I mean no slight to crews who work them. The very best boat handling is in order whenever passengers are aboard. What’s remarkable is that I’ve seen all these vessels/taken these photos since Monday of this week!
Circle Line, which carries at least a million passengers a year in the sixth boro, has a long and interesting history, an introduction to which you can read here. Circle Line Manhattan was launched in 2008, to replace Circle Line XI.
Know this Delaware?
Periodically, the 1974 Cape May-Lewes Ferry sends its boats into the boro to have scheduled maintenance done at Caddell’s shipyard.
Then there are the VIpeople movers. Utopia IV first caught my attention because it was actually US-registered, which made me wonder who this patriotic owner is. Later, I realized I’d seen this yacht before here. It also gained some notoriety about a year ago here, although then owner, RIP, was not on board at the time.
I don’t recall seeing Norwegian Sun in the boro, but don’t take me as a reliable judge of cruise ship comings and goings. Not even half a year ago, Sun was in Alaskan waters.
Ocean Explorer first arrived in the boro just over a year ago, as seen here. She’s here after having spent part of the summer sailing on the Great Lakes. Click here for near future tours on the cruise ship with the Ulstein bow.
If you’re on the sixth boro or the Hudson River today, you may see this Sea Lion, the Nat Geo Sea Lion. She’s Seattle-registered and was launched by Nichols Brothers Boatbuilders as Great Rivers Explorer in 1982.
She and her sister Nat Geo Sea Bird get around; unfortunately they can’t fit through the Erie Canal. Having said that, the Hudson River is a world-class scenic ride, and has always been.

The Hudson treats the traveler with magical sights like these. The castle atop the lush riverbank is still there, but that tug–Viking–is no more. I’m not sure the disposition of DBL 134.
One morning soon after sunrise that summer 2017 I followed Delaware a ways up the Hudson before overtaking her.
Ernest Campbell had started working in the sixth boro by 2018, but its livery has changed since then.
On the last day of June, I took a ride on the Rondout and saw (l to r) Johannsen Girls, Fells Point, and Severn. Severn now works in the Pacific Northwest although still for Vane.
Tarpon was working in the boro, but since that time has been sold to interests on the West Coast, although I’m not sure she’s made it there.
In June 2019, I caught Stephen Reinauer heading out the Narrows to rejoin its barge;
North of the border, SLS aka Sheri Lynn S was tied up at a Picton ON dock.
June 2020 one morning, I spotted Kirby Moran meeting ONE Minato, and
Janet D returning to her Elizabethport base.
In June 2021, it’s Charles D passing Adventurer while standing by for an incoming ship.
And finally, Sarah D was eastbound here in the Kills.

Hot to sweet . . . could have been a title too.
I hope obscure titles are not too off-putting, but I just realized that in late August 2019, I encountered Calusa Coast on the Cuyahoga while she was still on her contract to push liquid asphalt around the Inland Seas, aka the Great Lakes. To be liquid, asphalt needs to be over 250 degrees F, so that assist tug Cleveland here is close to some very hot liquid, safely enclosed in steel barge Delaware.
Two years ago, Calusa Coast and barge Delaware were nearing their contract.
Nine months ago, my friend Jack Ronalds caught the unit newly in salt water at the Strait of Canso. Earlier this week, I caught this unit, Calusa Coast pushing
sugar barge (technically, dry bulk barge) Jonathan up from coastal Florida to Yonkers.
That structure midships on Jonathan is a hatch crane.
As of this morning, they are still discharging at ASR, the sugar refinery. I’ve caught Jonathan and Sugar Express there on other occasions.
Come to think of it . . . Yonkers must be hot and sweet there now.

Heading up the Hudson River, here’s an oldie-but-goodie, Ronald J. Dahlke. Photo was taken about a month ago by Willard Bridgham in Waterford. Anyone know where she’s gone to now? She’s a sister of Urger and built in 1903!!

After about 3600 posts and almost 11 years, I’ve concluded my titling is based on a flawed assumption, i.e., nothing is random or generic except such things as our understanding. Another way of saying that is . . . everything has a specific context. A better title for this post would be something like tug/barge units between Kingston-Rhinecliff and Bear Mountain Bridges on such/such date with various sceneries related to autumn in the case. But, I’m not switching so bulky or to re-title everything, so on we go; life has no first drafts.
Having blabbered all that, I just have to say the Hudson Valley is a beautiful place, and the creations of our work in it serve to complement the natural beauty.

I took these photos over a two-day period in late July, traveling the entire 130 miles of the Hudson from the Battery to Troy while on the trip from Narragansett Bay to the “source” of the Chicago River. RV Shearwater here surveys the river/bay; that’s Willy Wall on the horizon left, so the Battery is behind us.
The Tappan Zee nears completion: the gap on the left side is all that needs to be bridged. The Left Coast Lifter will then become the “left coast lowerer,” I assume.
Infrastructure materials come out of the ground here in Haverstraw,
Viking passes below Osborn Castle,
summer play happens in the Hudson,
Buchanan 12 pushes more raw materials for infrastructure,
a tribe paddles over to Bannerman’s,
a truck lifts three vessels in imitation of Combi-Dock III,
Vane’s Delaware pushes DoubleSkin 50 upriver,
Spring Sunshine offloads aggregates at Caymans, where
a 400-ton 12-story structure awaits (then) its float down to NJ [more on that soon],
yacht named Summer heads south for Key West,
raw materials that once rolled on roads await the trip back to the blast furnace,
a horde does sun salutations on shore,
the American goddess Columbia trumpets at the top of a needing-to-be-updated soldiers/sailors monument in Troy,
and an oracle wearing a sea creature hat and using an old-school device taps out verbiage suggesting I’m headed for Ithaca and not Chicago, although I’m pleased with that too.

Somewhat related: Click here for a CNN Travel clip called “Liquid City” and starts out with the sentence “most people think NYC has five boros, but there’s really a sixth one; it’s the largest one and it connects all the others.” I heard it while waiting at the airport in Indianapolis the other day and was stunned. Do you suppose Justin Davidson reads tugster?
