Does equipment ever change in the sixth boro? Of course.
Thornton Bros, the 1958 Matton Shipyard product, was scrapped in 2014.
The 1971 Maria J is now Nicholas Vinik.
USACE Hudson, the sweetest Corps boat I’ve ever seen, got transformed into a fish house in 2019. Advance Victoria, 2006, is now Kition M, anchored in the Persian/Arabian Gulf.
The 2002 Labrador Sea is now Vane’s Brooklyn.
The 1944 Gage Paul inadvertently became a very deep fish house in 2015.
The 2002 Gramma Lee T is now in Norfolk.
Does the US Navy still have airships? If ever I have the chance to ride in one of these, I’ll take it in a heartbeat!
Bruce A brought in the 1970 Crowley Mars and
Michael J brought in the 1975 Crowley Pioneer; both Crowley’s were shipped off to Africa later in 2012. The 1971 Michael J. was scrapped late in 2021. Christine was working for Reinauer.
The massive 1970 Penn No. 6 is now the massive Vinik No. 6.
The 1972 Catherine Turecamo is now on the Great Lakes as John Marshall.

My library for the time period January 1, 2012 until today contains 11,244 fotos. Starting from tomorrow, any 2012 fotos will be taken along the road. So I decided to choose ONE foto per month, quite subjectively and without regard for this foto having previously been featured here. I don’t claim these are the best of the month. Only 12 fotos, one per month.
January, Sandmaster . . . waiting to refuel. Today, Dec 22 . . . Sandmaster was out there doing what it usually does, mining sand.
February . . . Eagle Beaumont escorted in the Arthur Kill by Charles D. McAllister.
March . . . side by side, CSAV Suape and bulker Honesty, Pacific bound through the Miraflores locks, demonstrating graphically what panamax means.
April . . . red-trimmed Taurus west bound on the KVK, cutting past Advance Victoria. And just today, I saw Taurus, now blue-trimmed, heading north between Manhattan and Jersey City.
Choosing just one foto per month is tough, but for May, here’s Swan packed and almost ready to go hulldown toward Africa with these specimens of the Crowley, Reinauer, and Allied fleets.
June . . . Weeks Shelby tows shuttle Enterprise from JFK toward Manhattan.
July and an unforgettable 4th using Pegasus as subject under the rocket’s glare
August . . . and coal-fired Badger heads into the sunset . . . and Wisconsin.
September, and a parade of vessels including Urger and Buffalo leave the Federal Lock bound for Waterford. My inimitable platform here is Fred’s Tug44.
At the start of the Great Chesapeake Schooner race, crew is setting sail on the unique tugantine Norfolk Rebel. In the distance, it’s Pride of Baltimore 2.
Coming into the home stretch from Montreal, it’s Atlantic Salvor delivering segments of the WTC1 antenna.
And December . . . it’s Stena Primorsk looming over the USCG vessels. At this time, Stena Primorsk was impatient to load that first hold with “north dakota crude,” only to experience the malfunction that has left her temporarily disabled upriver, its outer hull gashed open.
Tomorrow I hit the road . . . gallivanting and visiting season. I thank all of you for reading, many of you for helping me get these fotos, lots of you for correcting my errors and supplying missing info. Happy New Year and let’s pray for much-needed Peace on Earth . . . .
Yesterday close ups . . . today zoomed outs, like this. There’s something eerie about a bulker named Tigris (2003) headed up the Hudson, for Yonkers and then Aruba, but I’m glad bowsprite caught this foto, which suggests how narrow the North River here is. I’d seen Tigris but been unable to get a foto.
Likewise, Ocean Morning . . . I saw her on AIS over in Port Newark, but . . . only thanks to John Watson do I have a foto of her leaving here for Boston.
Great Eastern (2005) I caught several times . . . and by now, like Ocean Morning, she’s in Boston.
Yuan He (1994) also heads from here to Boston; this German-built vessel seems
to be showing her segments overly so distinctly I could be convinced she’s about . . . to molt!
Maersk Willemstadt was here last week and is already outbound from Savannah, Miami as next destination.
Likewise, Turandot (1994 , is Georgia bound tonight. Turandot, like other WW vessels, carries an operatic name like Don Juan and Traviata.
Conti Larimar (2011) may still be
loading scrap in the sixth boro.
What ship is this? Maria T
is actually a barge, a dry cargo covered barge whose contents are suggested by the name . . . LaFarge, and if that sounds French . . . well, it is. And I believe it’s pushed by Doris Moran.
Passing in the KVK here are Advance Victoria, escorted by Gramma Lee T. Moran, and
Valle di Granada, 2006, 2002, and 2005, respectively.
And to conclude, dramatic vessel with a forbidding name . . . Cape Wrath (1982), named for this wet and wild desert . .. of sorts, getting serviced over at GMD Bayonne.
