Here are the first two.

I saw her first as Irene Frazier here in the sixth boro.

I was onboard John Blanche here, when I learned the reason for the scale.  The Creek in thoe photos in that link was once navigated by Coral Queen.  I’d surmised that even the goose here knows she’s safe navigating beside the unit.  John Blanche pre-launch was covered here in January 2015.

 

The other morning I caught them as the sun rose,

March 2020 has arrived, and when I brushed the cobwebs away from the March 2010 archives, I discovered I took a lot of interesting photos that month, enough to do two posts from the 2010 March set.

Let’s start with the quirky Capt. Log, captained by the friendliest person I know in the sixth boro.  I rode along on the 63′ tanker for this story.

A fleetmate of Stena Perros , Stena Primorsk, is currently anchored off Long Beach NY.  Perros is off Santos Brasil today, 2020.  Ships are designed to travel the largest part of the planet.

Firefighter was still in service 10 years ago;  now it’s a museum in Greenport NY.  After the hauling out in this post, she was repainted in her original white/black colors.

MOL Innovation is escorted in by the indefatigable Ellen McAllister.  At 961′ loa, Innovation is more than 300′ shorter than the largest container ships calling in the sixth boro these days, and I suspect the 1996 build has been scrapped.

Back in 2010, I was not using AIS, but as I drove my car over the VZ Bridge on my way to work one morning, I noticed it entering the boro;  I was very happy that I was driving to work early that day;  I got the photos and still made it to work on time.  THAT is the logic of going to work earlier than necessary, and (almost) always carrying a camera.   Now I’m sorry to report the 1995 Jumbo Spirit is aground in a scrapping yard in Aliağa.

Maersk Wisconsin, a 2000 build, has also been scrapped.   Note the Humvees being transported.

McAllister Brothers is a 1958 Jakobson product;  I believe she’s laid up in the McAllister Staten Island yard.

Eagle Service is now Genesis EagleHorizon Discovery … in the distance, she’s also been scrapped in Texas. Note the different Manhattan skyline, only a decade ago.

More soon.  All photos in March 2010 by WVD, who now needs to wash the cobwebs off.  And since learning that Jumbo Spirit has been scrapped, I decided I need one more glance.

This post, beginning with Miriam Moran juxtaposed with downtown Newark NJ, is intended to demonstrate just how diverse the sixth boro is, in terms of vessels and shorelines. Has Miriam been in the sixth boro all of its 40-year career?

Ernest Campbell is 10 years older than Miriam, and did the better part of a decade up in Alaska.

Sapphire Coast, stemming here in the East River just off Rockefeller University, was launched in 1982.

In the KVK, Stephen B, 1983,  is trying to pass as Hen B.

Pacific Reliance, launched in 2006, was designed for long hauls.

Kenny G, in its distinctive blue livery, has appeared on this blog several times, but I’ve never learned where and when she was built.  Here she’s working on refurbishing to Pier 40.  Check out this link to Pier 40 as a prep to a series I’m starting in a few days.

At one point, C. F. Campbell was in the same fleet as the vessels that became DonJon’s Atlantic Salvor and Atlantic Enterprise.

And finally, it’s Harbor II, as before, in the Harlem River with the 44th precinct NYPD station in the background.

I’m surprised it’s been almost five whole years since I did the previous installment by this name.   The sixth boro is a huge fuel transfer port, and currently Sandy has moved oil back onto everyone’s brain . . . mostly because of how difficult it is to procure.  Fuel is gold.  The other day when I was standing in line to get to vote, the joke I heard several times was that at the end of the line we’d either get a ballot or a five-gallon container of fuel.

New York harbor is filled with expensive vessels either waiting to move fuel  . . . like Dace Reinauer,

Pati R. Moran, or

Rebel.  Or

they’re actually moving it . . . like from Eagle Matsuyama to this Bouchard barge probably usually pushed by

Evening Star.

Or fuel is actually being moved from one to another node in the distribution chain . . . like here Diane B,

Mako,

Pocomoke,

Pocomoke and Comet (in foreground),

B. Franklin Reinauer,

and Evening Mist . . ..

All this movement notwithstanding, gas rationing is still in effect.

Anyone read whether consumption has decreased because of the rationing?
