Twins today, but as with any twins, one will be deemed older. Do you know which?
Genesis Vigilant used to be called Michigan Service. Launched in 1981, she’s 99′ x 34′ and propelled by 3000 hp. The barge GM8001 is 348′ x 75′.
Years ago, i errorneously assumed she was an ATB.
This barge is slightly shorter, narrower and about a decade newer.
GM 6506 is being towed by Genesis Victory,
same dimensions as Vigilant and slightly newer, although still from 1981. Genesis Victory used to be Huron Service.

Ah ha! It is making more sense to me that barges are pushed up the Hudson River and around the waterways of the Sixth Borough BUT the same barges are towed whilst heading out and away from same. It is all about long tow ropes not getting tangled with other shipping bits and the pushing tugs have the extending Bridge for better visibility!. Doh! Here on the Wet Coast, inner harbour work is done by V drive tractor tugs who use Joy sticks to operate and can do a 360 degree turn on the spot. I wonder if a newer version of Swan Lake might be performed in a water ballet with pirouetting tractor tugs?

Für Elise is perfect for a water ballet! Thx for the ear worm. It was one of the first pieces that I learned on piano.

William,
Love your photo blog. Have you ever taken the Wall St to Rockaway ferry?
Do you think it runs all year?
I’ve been to their webpage, but dont trust the updated info.
I’m a retired videographer/ photographer living in Troy NY.

Thx for reading the blog and writing, Lou- I have taken the Wall-Rockaway ferry, and one of their boats–Flyer–is currently at the dock in Rockaway. They do indeed run the whole year. A recent change is that prices have increased from the subway fare of $2.75 to $4 per ride, which is a steal! If you pic a day when some vessels are anchored in Gravesend Bay, you’ll get some esp good photo ops!
