She’s not young,
but if this info is to be believed, she’s 147′ x 50′ x
16′ max draft and powered by three engines totaling 16,500 hp
and can carry $829,321.70 of fuel at current NJ prices!!
!@#$ !@!!,
she’s a big vessel,
as an understatement.
she has much more than 16,500 hp attitude! And she’s unmistakably an Otto Candies boat, lines that can be seen in lots of former Candies boats.
I missed her in May when she brought in a dead ship, and I don’t know why she’s in town, but I’m glad I caught her.
All photos, WVD.
A similar vessel was featured in this post from 2014.

The Kurt has been a part of The Golden Ray salvage project. Lead Tug pushing each cut section on a barge, up to a response facility. That is south of Mayors Point Terminal in Brunswick.

She’s been working at the GOLDEN RAY wreck in Saint Simond’s Sound for many months. Can’t imagine why that job would entail a trip to NYC.

I was wondering if it’d be collecting the Left Coast Lifter for someone…I guess not. What a monster!

from Capt Anon: “That bunch of cajun pirates have yet to comprehend that the rest of the world stopped adding everything including the galley blender to achieve their horsepower rating. The Kurt, if the two outboard engines were to be overhauled with the latest power packs would come in around 11,140 HP. However when Candies owned her, I believe they marketed her at 10,000 HP. This is old North Sea marketing bullshit left over from the early 1970s when a tug could fetch a dollar per horsepower. [Some years back] Crosby attempted to push the 3600 – 4000 HP boat as 7200 HP. They won’t acknowledge that kort nozzles only improve bollard pull, and don’t increase the horsepower. The rating on the engine block plate is what you get, no magical machinery or design amplifies the actual power from the engines. This got so bad that the europeans don’t use HP ratings anymore, only the engines KW potential.” Thx, Capt. Anon.

The Kurt J is in town to tow the ship Cape Edmont from NJ to Charleston. Her ETD is Saturday. She is owned by Crosby Tugs out of Galliano, LA.
