Or . . . what day of the week is it? There is a logic here.
While we’re looking at AIS, notice this surprise . . . 10 or so nm south of Fire Island, Grasp is (or was) . . . grasping.
This is not Grasp but her sister Grapple, both product of Peterson Builders of Sturgeon Bay WI, a shipyard now defunct but not far from one currently called Fincantieri Bay Shipbuilding, source of many vessels known in the sixth born. Over beyond Grapple is Apache.
My second question, for which I have no answer, is what project is Grasp doing off Fire Island?
Answer tomorrow to the first question.

One of those artificial reefs is in the vicinity. Maybe Grasp was making a deposit.

Paying respects to the wreck of the USS San Diego (ACR-6/CA-6), mined on July 19, 1918. She took six crew with her to the bottom in what was the only major loss of a US Navy ship during the First World War.

Mike– That’s brilliant. I knew the wreck was somewhere in that vicinity, but I had not considered the date . . . a centennial not much noted. Do you know anything of the ceremonies? Here’s more on the wreck: http://www.aquaexplorers.com/SanDiego.htm#.W1DtTy2ZNmA

No idea on ceremonies aside from maybe laying a wreath, mounting a memorial plaque or perhaps setting an ensign up on some piece of remaining hull. I’d keep any eye on the MSC news page or Navy.mil to see if they post any pics or news stories of the event. Either way, it’s good to see the USN out there marking the centennial, however they are doing it.

TWA 747 Crash Site? Was a movement to restore Fuselage & Wings to Memorial Site with Grave Marker, don’t know what came of it if anything, but Grasp or Grapple w/their diver crews would be ideal for the work.

That’s possible, but the crash site for TWA 800 is about 20 miles farther east.
