Traffic on the East River captivates, in part, because of the context, the vertical density shrinks even large vessels, or flotillas like this.
Weeks 531, I’m thinking, must be fairly new, not only because I’ve seen her only in 2018, but more so because she doesn’t show up on the Weeks crane pages. For a 500-ton lift capacity crane, she’s strangely absent online.
Unlike most crane barges that I’ve seen, she has a prominent superstructure.
When she was “west” bound the other day, Katherine was out front, tailed by
Susan and Michael (ex-Freddie K) Miller.
Back in January I caught the next two photos of Weeks 531 headed directly from the AK into Newark Bay. At first view, I assumed Weeks had a huge new tug.
That’s Bergen Point between the equipment and my lens.
All photos by Will Van Dorp. Can anyone fill in more info on the 531?
Previous posts featuring Weeks equipment can be found here with the Shuttle Enterprise and here with USAirways Flight 1549, in both cases involving Weeks 533, another 500-ton capacity crane.

Weeks 531 has recently traveled both north in the west channel of the East River and south after only a short time. Although an uneducated guess was that she might help out on the esplanade being built as part of the new campus over the FDR Drive for Rockefeller University, in fact Weeks 531 hasn’t been active on that task.

531 did make it onto these very nice Weeks brochures. http://www.weeksmarine.com/docs/default-source/Brochures-Newsletters/_2016_weeks_construction_brochure_emailable.pdf?sfvrsn=c8798df_0

Here are some things that for some reason don’t show up in that data: She was built as BETTY L for the Morris-Knudsen Co. It was for Manson Construction that she was named VALHALLA. For Horizon vessels, her name was ATLANTIC HORIZON, later shortened to ATLANTIC when Cal Dive took her over.

I posted the Q on her because she doesn’t show on the Weeks website. I had seen her in the newsletters, but I expected (maybe an error) a crane this large would be on the website.

WEEKS 531 was up in Yonkers today. She lifted the construction.Barge WEEKS 211 which had been partially sunk in last week’s North Easter The salvage went flawlessly. Congrats to the salvage crew.
