A controversial name that needs no introduction in the Sacramento valley.
From the mid-1800’s to the mid-1900’s their dredges turned hundreds of square miles of ‘tule swamp’ marshlands into navigable waterways between San Francisco Bay and Sacramento, creating – depending on who’s doing the recounting – either the greatest economic boon in the central valley’s history or the worst ecological disaster.
