. .. to paraphrase Mark Twain …are highly exaggerated.
What? . . . you ask? Well, click on Auke Visser’s link. You’ll see a foto of her being raised after a sinking. Then follow through to the phrase “disposal date.”
September 2005.
Ticonderoga looks pretty good for being technically scrapped.
I took these pictures in December 2013, earlier this week.
Check Auke’s link: she was built in Baltimore in 1954 and had sailed as Socony 9, Mobil 9, and Exxon’s Ticonderoga–her name when she ran aground and sank in 1992.

She never ever sailed for Exxon…1992 was way bfore the merger and that is when Mobil sold her to Witte after they salvaged her. My father was on the tug that rescued her crew when she sank…It was a controlled sinking in the way that they secured her to a barge before she went down but Mobil gave the orders to cut the lines and let her sink. It just so happened that she basically sank at an Exxon Dock at Bayway.

A lot of people get mixed up with Exxon forming Sea River Maritime and Mobil merging with Exxon. S/R was formed in the early 90s in reaction to the Valdez incident. When Exxon took over Mobil in 1999 Mobil’s Northeast inland fleet consisted of 3 tug/barge units and one small lube oil tanker (S/R Manhassett) that immediately became S/R. In 2001 S/R decided they no longer wanted to operate the Northeast fleet and returned chartered vessels to their owners. The S/R Everett/New York was relocated to the Gulf of Mexico.

She is at Federal E Port in Elizabeth as the “Manhassett” for Plaza Fuel. I don’t believe she is running. She was Mobil Service. Very small…1100bbls…
