Here’s the treat I’ll leave you with for a few days. The twin towers in the background should clearly state we aren’t in Kansas or 2013 anymore. Please comment on your speculations. Foto #1
This is from the converging waters just south of the Battery. Notice the towers to the right. Foto#2
Note the stripe on Coursen‘s bow. Foto #3
Note the I-beam structure to the right. Foto #4
Note the relative positions of the towers and the Manhattan-side Holland Tunnel vent. Foto #5
Again, thanks in advance for your comments and reminiscences.

Wow. Blasts from the past…
Image 1: why does Pioneer’s topmost look so short?
Image 2: barkentine Jessica, I think. Now called Adix, yards gone and rigged as a schooner.
Image 3: she was a proper Coast Guard ferry then. Not a “cutter”, though…
Image 4, 1984 or so, south side of Pier 15 East River, showing Black Pearl alongside the late great Black Barge vessel maintenance shop, Wavertree, Peking, under-construction Pier 17, bow of the tanker Kevin D. behind Black Pearl.
Image 5… Hyundai-built US Lines container ships, on North River near Christopher Street, laid up during bankruptcy proceedings. They were in possession of, or control of, the corporate trust department of Citibank at that time. Always wondered if those containers were full or empty…

Jeff – she was a floating maintenance shop, military surplus of some sort, wood construction with a plethora of wood and metalworking tools aboard. Sorry, I don’t know more.

PROGRESS is indeed a maintenance barge. i haven’t been down there recently, but i believe PROGRESS is elsewhere as stuff gets sorted out with the piers.
