Huron Service used to be Eric Candies. Look at the lines of her hull and house. Do they
look like these on Na Hoku? No surprise . . . Na Hoku used to be Chris Candies. At least a half dozen other ex-Candies boats work as regulars in the sixth boro.
Now look at the barge on Na Hoku‘s hip. DBL 85 used to be
Freedom. Stuff doesn’t change that much; it just gets renamed.
And this just in from Birk, another fleet sib, Sandmaster, (ex-Ben Candies). You recently saw this angle wet here on tugster.
Cheers.

Nice Candies. 🙂 Thanks too for sharing a link too that entry. I’d never seen anything like it, so it was probably illegal to show it. Looked very stealthish.

My favorite second life stories for ships are the Lee Tregurtha and the Algoma Transfer.
the Lee Tregurtha was a transport during the second world war. It had the superstructure in the normal place and looked like a normal ocean going ship. After the war, she was hauling goods up and down the east coast and was about to go to the scrap heap. then the 50’s came and a huge demand for iron ore. so one of the shipping companies got a hold of her and coverted her to a lake freighter (pilot house in the front, deck house in the back). If you look at pictures of her pilot house, she still wears her ribbons earned in the war.
The Algoma Transfer represents the histories of at least three ships. She’s the back of one and the front of another and bits of third in the middle.

[…] Usually Hornbeck vessels stick to saltwater, and here’s a photo by Will of this very same tug: https://tugster.wordpress.com/2012/02/22/second-lives-9-2/. […]
