It’s not a dead ship, whale, or turtle. I didn’t get any closer. It’s a first sighting in the boro for me.
Here’s another shot. And I don’t think the McAllister has it in tow. Maybe the submarine is escorting the tug?
Well . . . maybe not. That was an attempt at humor. UPDATE: Thanks to bowsprite . . . the sub is Royal Dutch Navy sub Walrus. More on Walrus, including good foto, on the 9/4/08 shipoftheday post. And Saturday a second sub Salvatore Todaro -Italian- arrives. Emerging for the sunshine? Below, it’s New Jersey Responder. Sub responding, perhaps?

An elderly friend told me that to say you were going down to the water to watch the submarine race was another way to say you and your sweetie were going down to neck. This may be true for most people, but of course, it does not apply to nerds like you and me, Tugster, eh??? for, we would really be looking out for them–craning the neck.

Bowsprite & Tugster,
I too find myself craning my neck to see what’s headed in and out but, I’ll NEVER ignore an amorous advance even when on the waterfront.!!

I saw this sub yesterday 10/14/08 going up the East River with police boats as guides and a coast guard cutter following close behind. Freaked me out but wonder if that is where it went.

The Koninklijke Marine (Royal Netherlands Navy) is actually pretty extensive for the size of the country.

They are a union Navy (10am coffee breaks!). They are also a pretty modern Navy. I had the pleasure of staying aboard HNLMS WITTE DE WITH (F813) a few nights and a night at their main base in Den Helder back in 1989. A VERY hospitable bunch.
The Dutch are also renown for their marine salvage expertise.
