Will- I found the same in Bahia, where I visited in Brazil. Influences in boat construction wax and wane based on cost, tradition and availability of materials, just like anywhere else. Salvador, on the coast and mostly exposed to open water, has beamy boats with a pumpkinseed shape to make beaching a little safer but open water fishing still possible, though I'm sure the boats roll some. I saw some Quincy, MA built skiffs, which was a pleasure, as I knew the guy who used to own them and always wondered where they went. SInce Brazil has a 50% import tax, I'm sure many small boats 'wash over the side' of boats run by entrepreneurial crew.

thanks doryman--what i've come to realize is that brasil is a huge country whose melting pot population is somewhat like ours. brasil's amish look JUST like our amish. i met some brasilians once whose grandparents had moved to brasil from japan: they looked like japanese, but their mannerisms and attitudes were thoroughly brasilian. ditto . . . influences--as you point out--these immigrant have brought to crafts like boatbuilding.

I see Asian and Mediterranean influences in the small wood boats rather than Western European details. Interesting. The air-cooled two cycle motors mounted on the transom are definitely a SE Asian commonplace.
The blue skiff thus outfitted could almost be an Italian sandolo. Definitely a mixed soup.
Kudos to Myriam!
