. . . not nearly so catchy a mnemonic as “right red returning,” but it means the same thing. Thomas J. Brown green left returning,
McCormack Boys green right going,
Kristy Ann Reinauer green port returning,
A nameless Caldwell truckable tug green starboard going,
Miss Gill with scow GPR (green port returning),
That green 9 in the KVK is a great place to set up fotos, but IMHO, it’s best to stick with “right red returning” as a memory keeper.

And then, there’s the Astro Jetson mnemonic… “Rut-ro, Rorge… Red Reft Reaving!!”

We got really confused watching the lake freighters coming off of lake Huron and into the St Claire River, the conclusion we drew is the buoy system works right through the great lakes and down to the sea?

Here are a couple solid links to explain the currently used bouyage system. We use IALA B.

Second one gets a little technical but both should clear the issue up.

I always liked
“Even Red Left Port” (as in Eric the Red) – gives you Bouys, station numbers, Bouy Number, and for the lubbers, that left = Port. Basically a LOT more info
