The Amazon was owned by the British theatre and tv actor Arthur Lowe, who is best remembered for the role as Captain Mainwaring in BBC tv’s Dad’s Army comedy series,who spent nearly 1/2 a million pounds restoring her between 1968 and 1971 when she was put back to sea; He lived on board for many years as well. He died back in 1982, when the vessel passed to his Son.

last night ’round midnight i think we passed cangarda on the hudson north of hook mountain. talk about an eerie sight!! i thought i was hallucinating. has anyone seen/fotod this vessel headed south on the hudson . . . june 22, 2011??

I took some photos of The AMAZON that I characterize as “painting with light and water”. I became even more interested in the AMAZON when I made the connection with the yachts designer, and another famous boat – FIRECREST.

Thanks for posting – I visited Mystic Seaport!

Cangarda’s captain says she has never crossed an ocean and is not designed to do it. Shallow draft for the Great Lakes. If she went across the ocean it would be on the deck of a ship. She got to the East Coast from CA on a ship instead of thru the Panama Canal so they have done it before.

Amazon is smaller and 125 years old tihis year. Crossed the ocean last year.

Amazing boats and an amazing place.

Saw the article on Amazon and the pics of Cangarda.

Amazon crossed the Atlantic in 2009 when 124 years old – she’s wood, too.

Yes. we here love ours, and she was saved by the application of a revolutionary new hull process. I miss seeing the rivets, but I rejoice that she’s still afloat for new generations to enjoy. So lovely. So dignified.
