As I worked along the Red Hook shore yesterday, my eyes did espy a bright red ship with tall masts and large white letters . . . a large trawler, a research vessel? I thought.
As it rounded the Battery, its identity became clear . . . a lightship!! And moving under its own power! It could only mean . . .
Nantucket, the restored vessel out of Boston.
Although I was too far south to get a close-up and lacked a chase boat, I did feel my day brightened after this. Here’s more on the lightships.

I saw the Nantucket anchored off of the 79th St marina on Sunday.
Spectacular boat watching that day, with Clearwater, Nantucket, and another ship I was hoping someone here could help identify.
She appeared to be metal hulled, about 110-120 feet long, painted a cream or beige color. She appeared to be a two masted schooner, but I think both masts had horizontal yards for square topsails. Anyone know more about her?
Regarding Nantucket; a little internet research leads me to believe that there are three former lightships painted as “Nantucket”. One (LV-112) is supposedly destined for a lighthouse museum on Staten Island and was/is currently moored in Oyster Bay long island. One (WLV-612) has been completely restored, served as a floating bed and breakfast off Nantucket Island, and is apparently for sale. The third (WLV-613) is apparently being restored in Massachusetts.
Was wondering if anyone knew which one this was?
Cheers,
Dan

From a former lightship sailor (511 & 512) a great job and thanx as most people today have no idea what a lightship “was”.

The schooner may have been the Corwith Cramer from SEA http://www.sea.edu
You probably saw WLV 612 http://www.NantucketLightship.com
